MASVINGO, Zimbabwe — The Musavarema Irrigation Scheme in Mwenezi District has successfully completed its wheat harvest for the 2024 season, yielding an impressive 62.92 tonnes.
The wheat was planted in late May and early June, with harvesting finalised on time to bolster national food reserves.
In a significant contribution to food security, 30 tonnes of the harvested wheat have been delivered to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB), while the remaining 33 tonnes will be retained for local consumption. This dual approach not only supports national reserves but also ensures that local communities have access to essential food supplies.
The success of the Musavarema Irrigation Scheme highlights the importance of irrigation in enhancing agricultural productivity in the region. Local farmers and stakeholders are optimistic that this harvest will set a precedent for future seasons, encouraging further investment in irrigation infrastructure and sustainable farming practices.
As the country faces ongoing challenges related to climate change, the achievements at the Musavarema Irrigation Scheme serve as a beacon of hope for improved agricultural output and resilience.
