FROM heartbreak in Division One to leading the Premier League, MWOS’ sensational debut in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League is a story built on struggle, bold strategy and divine belief.
Head coach Lloyd Mutasa says their blistering start to life in the top flight has been fuelled by the very challenges that nearly denied them a place among Zimbabwe’s football elite.
“Obviously, the challenge is big, but I would like to say glory be to God. We are not doing this on our own. You will remember that it wasn’t easy for us to get into the elite league, and the youngsters are very much inspired to be in the top-flight after a lot of challenges,” said Mutasa. MWOS appeared to have missed out on promotion when Scottland secured the Northern Region Division One slot. But the club refused to give up. Instead, they found a new path, striking a strategic partnership with ZPC Hwange, champions of the ZIFA Southern Region Division One League.
Due to league rules prohibiting multiple top-tier teams owned or funded by the same entity, in this case, the national power utility backing both ZPC Hwange and ZPC Kariba, ZPC Hwange could not take up the PSL slot directly.
MWOS seized the opportunity.
Through a comprehensive agreement, they acquired the top-flight berth while ZPC Hwange returned to Division One, now strengthened by financial support, technical assistance, and long-term developmental backing.
Now, just ten matches into their maiden PSL season, MWOS are top of the table with 22 points, three ahead of second-placed Scottland and defending champions Simba Bhora, who are both on 19. Highlanders sit fourth on 17 points.
The team’s sharp rise has captured the attention of the football fraternity, especially after their recent display of dominance in Bulawayo. MWOS turned heads with a performance defined by tactical discipline and confident game management.
Mutasa credited the team’s momentum to the hunger of his players and the emotional fuel drawn from their dramatic path to the PSL.
According to him, the adversity of their promotion push has become the driving force behind the team’s strong showing.
The partnership with ZPC Hwange is now being hailed as a progressive blueprint for football development in Zimbabwe. It combines MWOS’s financial muscle and technical expertise with ZPC Hwange’s deep-rooted community presence and proven track record in nurturing talent.
As part of the deal, players from ZPC Hwange’s 2024 promotion-winning squad received recognition and bonuses, with several now turning out for MWOS in the PSL. MWOS has also pledged to upgrade ZPC Hwange’s facilities, sponsor both youth and senior team kits, and invest in grassroots football in the Hwange region.
In addition, MWOS is offering performance-based incentives and technical support for ZPC Hwange players while rolling out corporate social investment projects in surrounding communities.
What began as a fallback plan has turned into a trailblazing project, one that’s making an impact both on and off the pitch.
As MWOS continue their fairytale run in the Premier League, their collaboration with ZPC Hwange is not just producing points, it’s laying a foundation for sustainable growth, community upliftment, and a new way of thinking in Zimbabwean football.
