MASHONALAND West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo on Tuesday commissioned the refurbishment and upgrading of Ngoni Stadium by MWOS FC, as well as the construction of Dambiza Road by Christ Citadel International Church in Norton.
The commissioning ceremony was held at Christ Citadel International Church in Ngoni, Norton.
Minister Chombo said the upgrading of Ngoni Stadium was carried out through a partnership between MWOS FC and Norton Town Council, while the construction of Dambiza Road was undertaken by Christ Citadel International Church in collaboration with the local authority.
She commended the partners for supporting the Second Republic’s development agenda guided by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind.
“During the Second Republic, President Mnangagwa saw it fit for us to work with indigenous churches,” she said.
“This is one of the indigenous churches that has done commendable work, which we are commissioning today.”
Minister Chombo said a good road network was essential for meaningful socio-economic development, as it improves access to homes, businesses, schools, clinics, churches and markets.
“There is no development without a good road network. I thank you for that foresight. Motorists are now driving on an improved road network,” she said.
She added that the upgraded road would also help improve vending stalls and stimulate other economic activities within the community.
Minister Chombo said Christ Citadel International Church had also installed eight water points and two water tanks for the Ngoni community, describing the initiative as a practical contribution towards improved service delivery.
She further applauded the church for working with her ministry in the fight against drug and substance abuse, saying churches play a critical role in protecting young people and building responsible communities.
Turning to sport, Minister Chombo described the upgrading of Ngoni Stadium as a major milestone for Norton and Mashonaland West Province.
She said MWOS FC partnered with Norton Town Council to upgrade and refurbish the stadium following the club’s promotion to the Premier Soccer League.
“MWOS looked for a partner, Norton Town Council, and saw it fit to help upgrade and refurbish Ngoni Stadium,” she said.
Minister Chombo said the stadium refurbishment was completed within a short period and the facility can now accommodate more than 5 000 spectators.
She revealed that MWOS FC invested between US$500 000 and US$600 000 into the project, demonstrating the club’s commitment to sports development and community empowerment.
