AFTER renovating Ngoni Stadium ahead of their clash against Dynamos tomorrow, Norton-based MWOS are now targeting construction of a CAF-approved stadium in the town.
The log leaders’ ambitious project, if implemented, could go a long way in helping the country at a time when clubs in CAF competitions and the Warriors have
been playing home matches in other countries.
MWOS owner Patrick Thomson has invested at least US$500 000 into the Ngoni Stadium project, increasing capacity from 1 000 to 7 000, which shows the seriousness of the football club. Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo yesterday toured Ngoni Stadium, where she assured the club of the Government’s support in establishing the stadium.
“We will support you to establish your stadium as this dovetails with President Mnangagwa’s vision of infrastructural development,” she said.
MWOS chairperson Clayton Arimoso clarified ownership of Ngoni Stadium.
“The stadium remains the property of Norton Town Council, and we only agreed to renovate it for our matches. We have plans to construct our world-class facility here in Norton approved for CAF matches,” he said.
Norton mayor Action Mataruse said the private-public partnership had created employment opportunities for local youths involved in the renovation of the stadium. The facility is 99 percent complete.
MWOS plans come at a time when the Government is in the process of renovating the National Sports Stadium to ensure that national teams and clubs playing international matches do so at home.
In its last update, the Government said renovations of the giant stadium would be complete before the end of the year.
