MWOS’ incredible debut topflight campaign hit another high on Sunday as they stunned Highlanders 1–0 at Barbourfields to reclaim top spot on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table.
Salif Cheya, the same man who made history in March by scoring MWOS’ first ever PSL goal at Baobab while Ngoni was still under renovation, returned to haunt Highlanders again.
This time, it was his 87th-minute strike that sealed a famous double over Bosso and sent Lloyd Mutasa’s men top with 37 points after 18 games.
“The boys persevered from the onset to the end and there’s an element of belief in themselves after the draw-back. I think I’m still focused on surviving relegation. Playing Highlanders is always very difficult; we were fortunate,” said Mutasa.
He is downplaying title talk, but results now tell a different story.
The victory, witnessed by national team coach Michael Nees and ZIFA vice president Kennedy Ndebele, further underlined MWOS’ tactical maturity. They absorbed Bosso’s pressure and struck when it mattered.
Highlanders, playing their first home game under interim coach Try Ncube, dominated long periods of the match. Mvelo Khoza and Tendai Muvuti both had chances, but wasteful finishing and solid defending from the visitors kept them out.
“I am very disappointed especially after dominating the match,” admitted a visibly frustrated Ncube.
Despite their modest pre-season ambitions, MWOS are now genuine contenders.
Their defensive solidity, ability to grind out results and fearless mentality against giants have made them one of the most compelling stories of the 2025 campaign.
For Highlanders, it should not be ignored that this was their first match after they fired coach Kelvin Kaindu.
Kaindu had managed to lead the Premiership giants to mid-table by mid-season and what Bosso now do in the second half will determine whether they get their title fight back on track or fight relegation.
