MWOS defender Valentine Katsande is confident of a successful season following his debut in the club’s historic 1-0 victory over giants Highlanders at Baobab on Sunday.
The win marks a significant milestone for MWOS, who recently earned their top-flight spot by acquiring the franchise of Southern Region Soccer League outfit ZPC Hwange.
Initially, MWOS had finished as runners-up in the Northern Region Soccer League behind Scottland.
Katsande, who joined MWOS from Black Rhinos, where he was utilised as a utility player, played a pivotal role in MWOS’ defensive strategy.
Katsande’s performance was instrumental in securing the hard-fought victory against Highlanders.
Reflecting on his debut, and the team’s performance, Katsande said:
“I am happy to be contributing positively to the team. We are still trying to settle well with the other guys and gel as a unit.
“Playing against Highlanders is always tough – they are daring and never give up until the final whistle.
“We managed to keep our shape and play according to the coaches’ instructions, which was a big factor for us.”
The win has boosted morale within the MWOS camp.
Katsande said it is important to remain focused.
“Now the focus is on our next mission against Bikita Minerals. We need to keep improving on aspects where we might have lacked.
“This win is a big motivation but it shouldn’t lead to overconfidence.
“A victory in our next game will be a strong statement of our intentions.
“As a team, we are looking to compete with everyone in the league and match them. We want to show that we belong here and can challenge the best.”
