My husband is an incredible dad, says Ammara

“Currently, the family is staying in South Africa, where the child was born. The baby is yet to visit Zimbabwe. However, she is expected to visit the country next year for a special event in Victoria Falls.”

SONGBIRD Ammara Brown has opened up on the health scares she faced earlier this year during the delivery of her second child, Azina Adele Brown-Sulen.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Entertainment, the 37-year-old singer and businesswoman shared how she went into “survival mode” shortly after giving birth to her daughter.

She described the experience as both emotionally and physically overwhelming, offering her a new perspective on life and motherhood.

“My biggest takeaway from this pregnancy and postpartum is learning to give myself grace. Eleven weeks later, and I am feeling human again,” she said.

Ammara, who celebrated her birthday on September 6, revealed that despite being under private care, she experienced trauma during and after labour — largely due to lack of mental health support from medical staff.

She attributed her distress to the medical team, who, in her view, focused more on the newborn and what she should be doing for her, rather than her mental and physical well-being.

“It was an emotional and physical whirlwind. I quickly realised that even medical staff need mental health support. Eventually, I turned to my therapist to help me navigate my healing,” she explained.

She recounted undergoing an eight-hour induction that failed, leading to an emergency C-section.

“I struggled because my instincts told me to show up for my baby, but my body needed time to heal.”

To support her recovery, she joined a group called WOW MOM for mothers with newborns and continues to work with her therapist.

She and her partner, Daniel Sulen, welcomed Azina Adele on June 17.

Currently, the family is staying in South Africa, where the child was born.

The baby is yet to visit Zimbabwe.

However, she is expected to visit the country next year for a special event in Victoria Falls.

Ammara describes her partner Daniel and her son Khameel as her “incredible tag team”.

She also appreciates the support of her househelp, manager Chido Musasiwa and long-time friend Marissa Vermaak, who assists with vocal training.

“My first family, Daniel and Khameel, are my incredible tag team. We have a wonderful househelp who helps during the week (God bless all househelps). My momager (manager/mom) Chido Musasiwa was here the day after I gave birth to help me; thank heavens. Friends are supportive at bay, while I have roped in one of my oldest friends, Marissa Vermaak, to assist me with vocal training twice a week,” she said.

To maintain her physical and mental well-being, Ammara dedicates three hours daily to self-care, which includes vocal training, gym workouts, shopping and professional grooming.

She also follows a meal plan tailored for muscle gain, breastfeeding and overall health.

“Meditation is also helpful as I get a moment to acknowledge where I am on all fronts. I just celebrated my birthday and felt so happy looking back on the past year.”

Despite the challenges, she finds immense joy in nurturing her newborn.

“Newborns are challenging, but nurturing Azina has been the greatest joy. I am always elated and exhausted. I remember so much from my firstborn, but I am also learning because she is a different person. I love breastfeeding, too — motherhood has endless gifts.”

She praised her partner for being a hands-on father.

“My partner is the dad I prayed for. He is changing diapers, making breakfast and completely in love with his new role as a father.”

Ammara also shared her hopes for Azina’s future.

“I hope she has a life filled with success by her own standards. I hope she is loved with the same tenderness her father has shown me — Eros. I hope she knows Philia and Agape intimately. Lastly, I hope she lives to be a centurion.”

The singer announced a shift in plans for the release of her album, now scheduled for 2026.

“The theme is ‘Flaming Lilies — multifaceted Zimbabwean women’. We are smart, sexy, cultured, spiritual and highly valued. I am going to celebrate us all, loudly and proudly. The album is sounding fantastic! If I could release it tomorrow, I would.”
