Mysterious coffin on farm

A 50-YEAR-OLD man woke up to the shock of his life after finding a small coffin covered with a white cloth on his farm in Mutimpa, Chingola, Zambia.

Copperbelt province police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba identified the man as Misheck Kabwe.

He said Mr Kabwe woke up around 5am, only to discover a coffin wrapped with a white cloth at his door.

The incident occurred recently.

Kabwe subsequently reported the matter to the Kasompe Police Station.

Police officers then visited the scene, opened the coffin and found a white egg and a plate.

Mr Kabwe said he had no idea who could have dumped the coffin at his door.

The coffin is being kept at the police station and an inquiry file has been opened. — Wires

Naked dancers at funeral

Four Marange men recently danced provocatively while naked during an elderly woman’s funeral, thereby drawing the ire of the local traditional leadership.

Fungai Mhise, Zivanai Matenhese, Lloyd Matenhese and Garikai Magumezano stand accused of disrespecting the dead, as well as trampling upon Marange traditions and customs.

The four naked men twerked and caused a scene at the funeral of Gogo Matenhese.

Zivanai and Lloyd are grandchildren of the late Gogo Matenhese, while Mhise and Magumezano were her neighbours.

The four appeared before Chief Marange, who indicated they are at risk of being banished from the area.

During the funeral, Mhise and his friends were allegedly drinking some illicit brew.

With the alcohol getting the better of them, they started singing offensive songs and dancing provocatively.

Village head Matowe said he was assaulted by the quartet when he admonished them for disrespecting customs of the land.

“I had trouble controlling these men. They assaulted me when I tried to talk to them. Their friend, who was also part of this madness, has failed to attend this court session as he is not feeling well after abusing alcohol during the funeral.

“He is an amputee, who uses crutches, but he danced so much, resulting in him falling down and injuring himself in the process. His face is swollen and he has wounds all over the body as a result. It seems they were all possessed by some evil spirits,” said the village head.

When elders were conducting traditional rituals at the funeral, he added, he asked all men to remove their hats as per their custom, but the four men refused.

“Magumezano shouted that he would not remove his hat unless all women removed their head wraps as well. It is our custom that a woman’s head should be covered all the time,” said the village head.

However, Magumezano denied committing the offence, saying he was herding cattle on the day and did not attend the funeral.

Mhise and Zivanai insisted they were drinking alcohol and dancing with Magumezano, as he had brought the cattle to the funeral.

They also asked for forgiveness, saying they were under the influence of alcohol.

Village head Matowe said he unsuccessfully tried to reason with Magumezano to take his cattle elsewhere.

“He was herding his cattle at the cemetery. I ordered him to leave, but he would not listen. They overpowered me and started dancing provocatively in front of other mourners.”

Chief Marange said the culprits deserve stern punishment that will act as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

“. . . it is a shame that you, Zivanai and Lloyd, failed to respect your own grandmother. Instead, you teamed up with your friends and caused havoc, thereby disrespecting the elders present at the funeral, as well as the traditional leadership.

“It is taboo in this area for someone to act in the way you did and you will get a punishment that is befitting,” said Chief Marange. — Manica Post

Pastor dies in bid to beat Jesus’ record

A Mozambican pastor has died after fasting for 40 days as he tried to match Jesus’ feat at the Mount of Olives.

The death of Francisco Barajah, the pastor and founder of the Santa Trindade Evangelical Church in the central province of Manica, has since been confirmed.

He died while undergoing treatment in hospital in Beira, where he was in critical condition.

After 25 days of fasting, he had lost weight to a point where he could not stand up, bathe or walk.

Days later, at the insistence of relatives and believers, he was taken to a hospital, but attempts to nurse him back to health were unsuccessful.

Believers at his church and his neighbours have not been surprised at the turn of events. — Wires
