AS the world grapples with the socio and economic impact of Covid-19, two Zimbabwean players in the South African top-flight league have become the latest casualties of salary cuts after their club announced adjustments to players’ wages.
Butholezwe Ncube and Talent Chawapiwa play for AmaZulu FC in South Africa and the club has announced that players’ salaries will be cut, although the extent of the wage adjustments were not made public.
AmaZulu FC joins three other clubs – Cape Town City, Cape Umoya United and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in implementing salary cuts for players. AmaZulu FC and Cape Town City play in that country’s top-flight league while the two clubs ply their trade in the second-tier league – the National First Division.
In England, Marvelous Nakamba – the Aston Villa and Warriors midfielder – will lose close to £55 000 over the coming weeks in wages after his club announced a 25 percent salary club for its players.
Most English clubs are opting to cut players’ salaries to keep non-playing staff on full wages until the league resumes.
Zimbabwean clubs are yet to implement salary cuts for players although the athletes are already losing out on thousands of dollars in potential winning bonuses and allowances due to the delay in the 2020 season kick-off.
