Cde Mzembi whose nom de guerre was Cde Tichatonga Zimbabwe succumbed to cardiac arrest on Sunday at West End Hospital in Harare.
Family spokesperson Engineer Mzembi confirmed the death.
“It is a sad loss to the family. Death has snatched the head of the family who was the beacon of wisdom and a unifying force. We are happy that he wrote his own history participating in both the Second and Third Chimurenga so diligently and his chest of medals is testimony to the selfless dedication and service to his country both before and after independence.
“He was a fighter par excellence even in ill health and death as I watched him fight to live even in his last gasps of breath. May his dear soul rest in eternal peace,” Engineer Mzembi said.
Engineer Mzembi said the body would lie in state today at house number 431 Mbizo 8 in Kwekwe before burial on Wednesday morning at the family homestead at Rupike Township in Masvingo.
