The hailstorm, which lasted less than an hour, also destroyed crops such as maize, sorghum and millet in areas around Rutenga Growth Point in Mwenezi and Chilonga communal lands in Chiredzi. Residents at Rutenga and surrounding areas and villagers in Chilonga have since appealed to Government for urgent assistance to enable them to repair their homes.
There were also growing fears that their household property could be damaged as most of them were now living in the open.
At Rutenga Growth Point most residents resorted to covering their houses with tents after the hailstorm destroyed asbestos sheets at most houses at the sprawling urban settlement of over 3 000 people.
The situation was equally dire in drought-prone Chilonga communal lands.
