THE Mzilikazi High School staff and School Development Association (SDA) have created a small haven for the students learning in a ghetto school.
In an interview with the high school headmaster, Mr Bhekokuhle Dube, he said when he got to the school there was no perimeter fence and that was the first project he embarked on in 2008, making sure that a durawall was put in place. After that, the school bought a commuter omnibus in 2009, in 2013 they bought a coaster, and recently they bought a bus worth $90 000 and a Toyota Hilux.
“We are trying hard to improve the school, we have a computer room, a library and we are planning to build another one because our enrolment is high,” he said.
“Even the discipline is still improving; the school staff is trying hard to make sure that the students are well behaved with the help of our SDA which is working in hand with us.”
The school is always excelling in sporting activities even at national level and it has produced best soccer players which include legendary Peter Ndlovu, Elvis Moyo and Carlvin Moyo who are currently playing for FC Platinum.
“We also have our former students helping us with school renovations, last year other former students repainted the classrooms and toilets and they replaced broken windows, switches and lighting system.”
The school’s enrollment is 1 681 students. They have 73 staff members although they are supposed to have a staff complement of 74.
“Among this enrolment we have more than 50 students who are doing STEM subjects and last year we had a student who scored 20 points, our Advanced level pass rate was 86 percent and we are proud of it,” added Mr Dube.
He said they are also encouraging girls to do STEM subjects.
“We are working very hard to improve our Ordinary Level pass rate, the problem we faced is that students registered in other institutions because of their pending school fees.”
He said parents should communicate when they have difficulties in paying school fees.
The SDA chairperson Mr Austin Moyo said, “The school is supporting students in all activities although we are also facing financial problems like any other school. Our next project is to build a double-storey building and a library.”
