A man from Mzilikazi suburb in Bulawayo takes it upon himself every morning to control traffic and help schoolchildren cross the road safely at a zebra crossing near Mzilikazi Primary School.
Mr Nonhlalo Nhliziyo began volunteering at the crossing point after two police officers, who previously assisted learners, stopped showing up when road markings were fixed.
“It’s been two years now. Many children come from the stadium side, and drivers don’t stop at the zebra line. Children have been hit by cars while trying to run to school,” said Mr Nhliziyo.
He said although he does not live in that area, he believes it is every parent’s responsibility to ensure the safety of children.

“I believe all these children are ours, even if I don’t have a child from that side. They all deserve to be safe,” he said.
After a year of volunteering, Mr Nhliziyo was hired by Mzilikazi Primary School as a security guard.
“After helping the children for a year, the school gave me a job as a security guard. I come here early in the morning before school starts, then go to work,” he said.
