THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe are not leaving anything to chance in their efforts to increase the numbers of local athletes at the Olympics as three athletes are in South Africa for another qualification meet today.

Athletes Tendai Zimuto, Nyasha Mutsetse and Wellington Varevi are in South Africa for the Port Elizabeth Nite Series.

NAAZ president Tendai Tagara said they are now targeting the middle-distance events with five athletes having already attained qualification times.

“In our endeavour to push our athletes to qualify for the Olympics, we are sending athletes to South Africa for a qualification competition. Had it not been for limited numbers, we wanted to send seven athletes.

“We are pushing for middle-distance and short distances now that we have five athletes that have qualified in marathon. For men we already have enough athletes in marathon, but for women we still have two spots,” said Tagara.

Sprinter Gabriel Mvumvure has also qualified for the 100m event.
