SOUTH Africa-based hip hop artist, Nadia Nakai, has been nominated for the prestigious BET Hip Hop Awards, scheduled for October 4.
Although the BET Hip Hop Awards are held separately from the BET Awards, Nakai joins Amapiano queen, Shasha, in being associated with these prestigious awards.
Shasha won The Viewer’s Choice Best New International Act in 2020, making her the first Zimbabwean musician to land that accolade.
Nakai was nominated in the category of the Best International Flow, and she is among only three artists from Africa in that category.
She is competing with seven other artists – Benjamin Epps (France), Black Sherif (Ghana), Blxckie (SA), Central Cee (UK), Haviah Mighty (Canada), Knucks (UK) and Tasha & Taracie (Brazil).
Drake leads with 14 nominations, followed by Kanye West, with 10 and Kendrick Lamar (9).
Fat Joe will host the BET Hip Hop Awards for the first time.
Meanwhile, Nakai has been doing well in the hip hop industry, recording under Bragga Productions, in South Africa.
The rapper has done numerous collaborations, with some of the best hip hop artists on the continent, such as Cassper Nyovest, and the late Rick Ricky, among others.
She is among the best female rappers of her generation in Africa.
She is also an Afrima awards winner and SAHHA award winner.
