THE awards season is back!
As expected, raging debate will dominate various media platforms for some weeks with fans desperate to defend their favourite stars.
Yesterday, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) released nominees vying for the 21st edition of the National Arts Merit Awards. The awards will be held at the Harare International Conference Centre on February 25 under the theme “Unlocking Dreams”.
Over the years, there are categories, known for generating a lot of debate, especially music.
This time around, youthful stars dominated the music category, a departure from what has been the preserve of stalwarts and yesteryear artistes.
Of interest, is the New Comer of the Year category pitting Victoria Falls-based teen singer, Andrea the Vocalist, against Leo Magozz, Bling 4 and Brian Brian Jeck.
The 13-year-old Andrea the Vocalist might be the youngest in this category, but he sings music with substance. Without taking anything away from other nominees in this category, Andrea the Vocalist is a bit special.
He makes the simple appear sophisticated by his vocal ability, stage communication and songwriting technique.
Another fierce debate to look forward to is likely to be generated in the Outstanding Male category.
Jiti singer Baba Harare, Freeman and Mark Ngwazi are competing in this category.
Over the past few years, Baba Harare has been consistent while Ngwazi’s stocks continues to rise with each passing day.
Not to be outdone is Freeman, who has never stopped reinventing the wheel. Now in their early 30s, the trio’s exploits to dominate such awards shows that the future of Zimbabwean music is in safe hands. In this category, anyone of them can take it home.
The trio vying for the Outstanding Album category, will further trigger more debate since they all excelled.
Mutare-bred gospel diva, Dorcas Moyo, who is no doubt a favourite of many, stands a chance to win a NAMA after getting two nominations.
She, however, faces stiff competition in the Outstanding Female Musician category after being drawn against Feli Nandi and Sandra Ndebele. Dorcas has also been nominated for Outstanding Song category, an indication that she really worked hard.
To ensure there is continuity in the sector, NAMA will honour arts promoters. Matabeleland Natural Resources Management, X-Mo Squad, 2 Kings Entertainment and Chipaz Promotions are vying for the Promoter of the Year category.
