Windhoek – Namibia’s president-elect Hage Geingob on Wednesday nominated his vice president, prime minister, and deputy prime minister, who will govern the country with him from March 12.
Nickey Iyambo, 77, current minister of veteran affairs, and a “tried and tested Swapo party cadre” would be vice president, Geingob told reporters in Windhoek.
The briefing was broadcast live on television and all radio stations of the public broadcaster NBC.
Iymabo would be the country’s first vice president after the Swapo-dominated Parliament rushed through several constitutional amendments last September, among them the vice president’s position.
Successor to Geingob as prime minister would be Finance Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, 47.
Deputy prime minister would be the incumbent Foreign Affairs Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
“I don’t want the office of the deputy PM to be a stand-alone office. That person must also have another important portfolio,” Geingob said, citing “cost factors” as a reason for this decision.
Geingob would be sworn in as the third president of Namibia on March 21, along with the new Cabinet.
He said he would reveal his government’s strategies and possible changes to ministries, among them a ministry to combat poverty, next week. – Sapa
