A Nyanga traditional healer who paraded his tools of trade at a beer hall has been fined three goats for the offence.
Sekuru Alouis Chishiri, who is well-known in Nyanga for selling goblins, pleaded guilty to his offence when he appeared before acting Chief Saunyama recently.
Sekuru Chishiri is alleged to have gone into a bar in Nyanga, leaving his bag outside the drinking hall.
While he was inside, one Rumbidzai Nyakujipa opened the bag and took out a knife.
She allegedly fell into a trance and started attacking people with it.
One of the victims, Tichaona Chitepo, said he escaped death by a whisker.
“Luckily the knife was not sharp and no one sustained any injuries. Nyakujipa tried to attack my wife and I with the knife. When I asked her what she was doing, she said she was checking if the knife was sharp enough,” said Chitepo.
It is alleged that Sekuru Chishiri is now asking all those who were attacked by his knife to appease him.
“Instead of punishing Nyakujipa, Sekuru Chishiri is targeting us. In fact, he told my wife that if she does not appease his ancestors, she will die as his knife was in contact with her skin.
“We are now living in fear because she has been sickly ever since that day. Sekuru Chishiri claims that he is behind her illness. Everyone in this area knows that Sekuru Chishiri is a dangerous traditional healer, they say we should not mess up with him. We do not want to die, so we beg the court to intervene and help us in engaging him,” said Chitepo.
In response, Sekuru Chishiri said he is furious that his tools of trade were violated by Nyakujipa.
He said he will unleash his full wrath on Njakujipa.
“Nyakujipa touched my knife and shaker. This infuriated my ancestors so much and they want appeasement. My ancestors instructed me to use Chitepo’s wife as an example,” declared the traditional healer.
However, acting Chief Saunyama castigated him for taking his traditional healing tools to a beer hall.
“Muri kupandutsa chivanhu nekuenda nezvinhu zvaana sekuru kumabhawa (You are violating our traditions by taking these sacred tools to public places.) These tools of the trade should not be touched by anyone who has no authority to do so. A bar is a no go area for such paraphernalia and you should properly secure them before quenching your thirst in the bar,” said acting Chief Saunyama.
He fined Sekuru Chishiri three goats and ordered him to reverse the Chitepos’ curse.
Sekuru Chishiri agreed to release the pair, but stated that the curse would shift to Nyakujipa.
