ITS all systems go at Hillcrest College this weekend as more than 50 participants from various schools in Manicaland will battle it out in the NASH (National Association of Secondary Heads) Youth provincial chess championships. The organisers of the event have urged teachers across the seven districts of the province to urge school children talented in chess to come aboard and participate in the second edition of the championships.
The event will start today (Friday) at 2 pm and will run up to Sunday.
Participants in the three categories which are Under-14, 16, 18 and 20 will take part in the potentially explosive tournament.
Manicaland head-in-charge for chess, Lenos Madzikatire, in an interview, said the winners in each category will represent Manicaland province in the national youth chess tourney to be held in Mutare from March 27 – 30.
“We hope to come up with the best players who will be talented enough and form Team Manicaland that will compete with other provinces in the national competition.
It was saddening that Manicaland failed to produce any one chess player to represent the country in the world championship that was held last year in Durban, South Africa. Preparations are at an advanced stage now and we are looking forward to having a successful and exhilarating festival,” Madzikatire said.
No player from Mutare district took part in last year’s tournament which was held at the same school.
