foreseen is political as politicians are clashing because they want it to meet their needs against the needs of the people who pointed out what they wanted in the final product.
If Constitution-making is the act of drawing up principles by which the country shall be run, then the details should be left to Parliament to enact laws to spell out how state institutions should operate.
The Jewish people were governed by simple principles that formed the core of their nation. These principles were the 10 commandments. Whatever was added to these principles, were laws enacted afterwards.
Are our Constitution drafters failing to come up with our own commandments that are relevant to the wishes of the people? What kind of State do the people want? How did the people say they wanted to be
governed? Is this difficult to put into words?
For the past 32 years of our independence, we should have developed principles by which the State can be built by our own hand not by foreigners. The longer the exercise of constitution making takes, the more the danger that people shall be greatly polarised.
The Constitution should guarantee Zimbabweans their rights, in a way indigenes shall be supreme in whatever sphere of their lives. They shall determine what is right for them not anyone else.
Is it difficult to form the principles of our Constitution? Anything else granted by our laws, is by the generosity of Zimbabweans not by right of non-indigenous people who may happen to reside in our country.
Zimbabwe should be different from the US.
The US is made up of immigrants while the indigenous people were banished away into settlements.
Zimbabweans had been banished into tribal trust lands while those in South Africa were banished into the homelands.
Now that the indigenous people in Zimbabwe have reclaimed their dignity and the right to rule themselves, they are failing to define who they are and their aspirations. In the US, the immigrants call it, “ The American Dream.”
These Americans had the pride to put into their constitution that, “All men were created equal.” They did not include the Red Indians or the slaves and their descendents.
That was a Constitution of exclusion by race.
As Zimbabweans we’re now faced with a simple task to define ourselves as a free people not answerable to anybody, but our God. So what is difficult in coming up with our constitutional tenets written in all our own indigenous languages.
Like I have said earlier, obsession with personalities in writing a Constitution is wrong. If the people want a presidential system, so be it. We should then define what type of presidency we want.
This has nothing to do with anyone who may win the presidency, but that our wishes must be paramount to entrust someone to be the head of our nation.
From what we are witnessing in other countries, we do not want a President who can be ridiculed by artists or whoever in the name of freedom of the Press.
Our cultural and religious values must be paramount in any constitution unlike the so called liberal Constitutions that destroy the fabric of society by giving rights to unnatural and abominable acts.
Another aspect that must be preserved is that Zimbabwe is one country and all its people belong to a unitary State not divided by tribal entities.
The women of Zimbabwe define what this country is all about. They reside wherever they want through marriage or whatever designation.
The women of Zimbabwe have proved to the nation that tribal affiliation is just a propagation of men with tribal tendencies in order to safeguard their power though chieftainships and now through what they call, devolution of power into tribal kingdoms.
