Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Minister Richard Moyo has urged Zimbabweans to embrace domestic recycling to end solid waste management challenges faced by most urban councils.
Minister Moyo said domestic recycling, which entails separating and composting waste at household level, promotes a pollution free environment.
The Minister said this in a speech read on his behalf by the deputy director in his office, Mr Tapera Mugoriya, during the 2018 provincial World Habitat Day commemorations held in Victoria Falls on Thursday.
“Zimbabwe is faced with solid waste management challenges in most urban local authorities where rapid urbanisation in the last decade and economic decline placed considerable strain on resources. Most councils as a result failed to provide adequate services to residents.
“Addressing these challenges requires an integrated waste management approach which reduces the source and level of waste through domestic recycling to manage the way waste is sorted, disposed of, collected and recycled,” said Minister Moyo.
He said people should comprehensively participate in solid waste management programmes to improve the performance of waste management systems in the province.
The Minister also challenged local authorities, as well as the public and private sector in the province to jointly develop a system of accountability in the disposal of waste.
“It’s crucial for us to focus our energies and attention on President Mnangagwa’s vision of attaining an upper middle income economy by year 2030. I therefore call upon us all to support Government’s quest to deliver sustainable human settlements which are cleanest, safest, pollution free and ultimately habitable as this is one way to attain the goals and aspirations of vision 2030,” he said.
Victoria Falls Mayor, Councillor Somvelo Dlamini, whose speech was read by Ward 10 Clr Nkanyiso Sibindi who chairs the committee on Housing and Community Services Development, said his council prioritises solid waste management issues. — @ncubeleon
