Bulawayo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, has said the nation must never forget the sacrifices made by the country’s heroes in the fight for Zimbabwe’s freedom.

Minister Ncube made the remarks in a speech read on her behalf by the Director of Coordination in her office, Ms Boetsoarelo Noko, during the burial of the late provincial hero, Cde Innocent Majimba Nhlabathi Mpofu, at Nkulumane Provincial Heroes Acre yesterday.

Cde Mpofu, who died at Mater Dei Hospital last Wednesday, was 67.

“It is another sad moment for the province as we are gathered here again to bid farewell to one of our gallant sons of Zimbabwe, Cde Innocent Mpofu. The legacy left by the late Innocent Mpofu will never fade as we shall always remember him for his amazing works and deeds,” said Minister Ncube.

She said the contributions made by the country’s heroes must always be recognised and serve as an inspiration for citizens to continue working towards national development.

“While we are celebrating Cde Mpofu’s life, we should never forget the ultimate sacrifice that was paid by him and other comrades for the freedoms we enjoy today. It is our duty to preserve the gains of our independence and continue to work for the betterment of this great nation of ours,” she said.

Born in Zenka, Nkayi District, in 1958, Cde Mpofu worked at a sugar refinery before joining the liberation struggle in Zambia via Botswana before 1976.

During the war, he operated in the Kezi and Brunapeg areas of Plumtree. After independence, he served in the Zimbabwe National Army before retiring.

Cde Mpofu is survived by his wife, Mrs Ntombiyomswathi Nomthandazo Mpofu, two children, and two grandchildren.
