THE annual Zimbabwe October 5s bowling tournament begins this morning with 18 teams expected to battle for honours at the City Bowling Club.
Highlands are the defending champions, in the three-day tournament, which has attracted the country’s top bowlers.
City Bowling Club competitions and organising committee chairman, Richard Mukudya, said everything was now in place and 12 teams had registered by yesterday afternoon.
“This year’s event will be of great importance as we will be celebrating City Bowling Club’s 90th anniversary and 13 years of the tournament’s existence,” said Mukudya.
“We were expecting foreign teams from Malawi and Namibia, but they could not make it because of other commitments.
“We are expecting bowlers from various parts of the country to attend the prestigious event.
“All is set for the competition and the venue is in very good condition. We want to extend our thanks to corporates who came on board such as NSSA, Cyclone Industrial, Meikles, Mazvikadei, Jacaranda, Emras, among several others.
“Registration ended yesterday.”
Minister of Sport and Recreation, Makhosini Hlogwane, is expected to open the tourney.
Rainbow Signs marketing executive, Kondwane Chikerema, said they were happy to be associated with bowling, a sport they believe was growing among the young.
“Our aim is to see the sport grow and people compete at the highest level,” said Chikerema.
