POSITIVE changes beacon for boxing following the adoption of a new organogram by Zimbabwe National Boxing Control Board (ZNBCB) which will see a full secretariat in place.
ZNBCB chairman, Richard Hondo said they hope to increase interface with stakeholders while allowing for the ease of the administration of the sport.
He said lack of a full time secretariat had hindered the success of previous boards as they had to do administrative duties instead of monitoring progress and coming up with policies for the sport.
According to the new organogram, the chairman becomes the accounting officer, while a chief executive officer will be in charge of the overall operations of the board with the general secretary becoming the “centre of activity”.
“Previously it seemed boards were taking ownership of the sport, as they had to run it full time without any secretariat. This presented problems when a new board would be coming as policy would also change at whim.
“With a general secretary in charge of the day to day running of the sports, interacting with stakeholders and being point of contact it will be easier for programmes to be implemented with minimal disruption when a new board comes in,” said Hondo.
He said the new dispensation provides for long term continuity as the general secretary would be a permanent employee who becomes the link in between boards.
Hondo said in the old set-up the board was viewed as the judge, jury and executioner in the resolution of disputes but this will change, adding the general secretary would increase visibility access and efficiency of the board.
“A physical location means there is now a permanent storage facility for records and documents and ease of access for all stakeholders,” he said.
Hondo, whose current term at the helm of the board started in January, urged stakeholders in the sport to register with fees ranging between $5 and $40.
In a schedule released on Friday, a promoter is expected to fork out $25, although they have to provide proof of financial capacity, a manager is registered for $15, while trainers and matchmakers/agents would pay $10 apiece to be on the books of the associations. Boxers are expected to part with $5.
“The registration process is ongoing and will end on 31 July 2017. Note that any boxer, manager, trainer, promoter or official who would not have registered with the board by the end of July would not be allowed to participate in any boxing activity or planning without a valid licence,” said Hondo.
