National milk output increases

The sector, which had been hard hit by economic challenges in the last decade, has recovered on the back of donor support. National milk output currently stands at 3,5 million litres per month.
NADF spokesperson Mr Ajs Kirk said small-scale farmers were now producing 57 000 litres per month.
In the last two years milk collection centres have been re-established in areas that include Umzingwani, Gokwe, Risitu Valley and Guruve.
“All the centres combined are producing 57 000 litres per month and this equates to about 2 percent of national production,” Mr Kirk said.
He said the centres had since established a revolving fund to purchase cattle, stockfeeds and drugs.
The European Union has extended 600 000 euros in support of small-scale dairy farmers in the last two years. – New Ziana.
