BIG Elephants handball club will next month hold the sixth edition of the National Unity Cup at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex. The tournament is scheduled for December 19 to 22 with more than 50 men and women teams expected to compete.The event is being organised by Big Elephant Club and tournament coordinator, Bernard Muzanemhamo, said the event is meant to bring the handball family together as the year comes to an end.
“We are expecting 40 men and 40 women teams. We have invited High Schools, Colleges, Universities and Clubs and registration is already underway.
“The tournament is open to players from the age of 16 and above.
“Since the event was introduced five years ago I think we have managed to achieve our goal because the Unity Cup is the biggest local handball competition in this country.
“This year we are hoping for a competitive tournament and we are expecting new teams to come on board.
“Last year we had 12 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams but this year we want to make it a big event that’s why we have more teams.
“We have been holding the tournament at the aquatic complex because it’s the rainy season and we have an indoor facility there,” said Muzanenhamo.
Muzanenhamo said as part of their preparations they are going to hold a referees’ course before the tournament starts to equip officials with the rules and regulation of the game.
“We are also going to host a referees’ course for our lower level coaches who are going to attend this tournament at the same venue.
“We are going to have an instructor from Europe to conduct the course.
“We are also still running around to look for more sponsorship to cater for the event. So far we have managed to source some of the prizes such as the medals and trophies,” said Muzanenhamo.
Hardshots and Dotito are the defending champions in the men and women category respectively and they will be hoping to defend their titles.
