TIZHANI Ncube scored a gross of 158 points to win Hwange Golf Club’s major tournament of the year that saw 45 golfers taking to the greens over the weekend.
The play format was the medal stroke play.
Ncube grossed 85 points with a 75 net score, on the second day of the championship he managed a gross score of 76 and netted 69 points. An elated Ncube said the win was historic for him.
“It was a great thing for me, for the first time the championship switched hands after seven long years,” he said.
Outgoing champion, Stephen Simukai, who turned professional recently, had won the championship since 2008. Ncube said that his win was not by default but due to his hard work.
“It wasn’t by default. I was trailing by seven shots in the end of the first day. I recovered and ended up winning by a shot. I’m very happy,” he said.
“I sincerely hope the number of participants for the championship increases in the coming championships so that more people contribute to the growth of the sport in this side of the country” he added.
Following hot on Ncube’s heels was Robson Dumani with a gross score of 159.
The winner for the A division was Edwin Moyo with a gross score of 174 while the runner up for the division was Amos Lungu with a gross score of 177.
The B division was topped by Ntungamili Matshanga with a gross score of 196. Following closely behind him was Milton Magidi with a gross score of 198. The ladies divisional winner, Matron Mguni, managed a gross score of 176, followed by Virginia Mabhena who trailed with a gross score 199.
Meanwhile, Artwell Ndebele has been ushered in as the new Hwange Golf Club captain taking over from Vumi Moyo while the new vice-captain is Cephas Ncube.
Lovemore Dube is the treasurer while the committee’s secretary is Mdudusi Sibanda.
The committee members are Jones Dube, Charles Kolosa, Robson Dumani with Matron Mguni completing the set up as ladies captain.
Victor Rakabopa remains the club’s chairman while Hwange Colliery Company managing director Thomas Makore, also an avid golfer, is the club president.
Preparations for the Kamandama Memorial Golf tournament have also kicked off in Hwange with a total of 120 golfers expected to tee off on June 5, 2015. Former captain Moyo and Dumani were the winners of the 2014 edition.
