Ndebele novelist: Preserving Language and Culture

Faith Ndlovu

IN a world where indigenous languages face the threat of extinction, one writer is on a mission to keep the isiNdebele language alive and vibrant.

Through his novels, Pascar Ncube is sharing unique cultural experiences and contributing to the Ndebele community by preserving the language for future generations.

Inspired by his traditional upbringing and concerned about the influence of external languages, Ncube is using his writing as a means of protecting, improving, and preserving the language.

“Writing in Ndebele allows me and others to preserve and promote our language as it helps address historical and cultural issues by ensuring important narratives are not lost. I am motivated by a desire to keep the isiNdebele language alive and vibrant,” said Ncube.

His novels focus mostly on the topics affecting contemporary Ndebele society including corruption, teenage pregnancies and child headed families. Ncube‘s writing sheds light on instances of the Ndebele community structures, leadership and grassroots organisations, highlighting the interconnects of homesteads, villages and urban lifestyle.

Ncube has faced challenges throughout his journey as a novelist but has managed to overcome them by developing effective strategies.

“Writing in a minority language comes with unique challenges, but I find creative ways to address them, such as promoting my work within the community, workplace, and on social media to reach a larger audience. I also use branded t-shirts and caps to advertise,’ he said.

He has published a number of books, including Ikhuba lomunye Alila Ndima, Okulempondo akufihlwa emgodleni, Izilingo zomhlaba, uGugu lo Zandile, Imfihlo yomdeni, and ilifa lezithutha lidliwa yizihlakaniphi. With these novels, he ensures authenticity by conducting extensive consultations on themes and aspects before writing.

“I have renowned academics who are always available to advise on issues of both spoken and written language. I am also not detached from community leaders when it comes to cultural aspects,’ he said. ‘Besides, I enjoy reading old books written by earlier writers, and I gain a wealth of knowledge from such sources,” said Ncube.

As he balances the creative demands of writing with the need to inform, educate readers about Ndebele culture and language, he also plays a role in promoting cultural understanding.

“I believe that creative writing, educating, and informing readers are interconnected means of information dissemination. As I navigate my daily life, whether at work, home, or within my community, I find inspiration in the world around me. This inspiration fuels my writing, allowing me to share my experiences with others through novels,” he said.

Through his engaging and culturally relevant novels Ncube is making a significant impact on the readers in Matabeleland and beyond.
