Ndichirimupenyu to honour women

to be held in Harare on November 24.

This year’s awards, which are being hosted in conjunction with the with the UN Women Gender Support Programme, will see various women from the areas of art, business, sport, social and national realms, being recognised for their contribution.
Now in its sixth edition, the Ndichirimupenyu Awards will this year have a new category, “The Best Male Against Gender-Based Violence”, which was introduced last year to encourage men to be active in fighting gender based violence.

“This year the category will be split into the following: Best Male Against Gender-Based Violence, Outstanding Media Personality on Reporting on Gender-Based Violence, Best Traditional Leader, Best Faith Leader and Best Responsive Institution. Nominations are solicited from, but not limited to the Gender Forum members, individuals can also send their nominations,” said an official from the Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe.

The Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe first conceived the idea of the awards in 2005 where only three out of 25 awards of service to the nation in the arts were awarded to women.
Some of the categories in the awards include:

The Silver Bracelet (Woman of the Decade); Art; National Social Contributor; Business; Sport; Gold Bracelet (Lifetime Contribution); Best Male Against Gender-Based Violence; Outstanding Media Personality on Reporting on Gender-Based Violence; Best Traditional Leader and Best Faith Leader Best Responsive Institution.

Previous winners include the late broadcaster Mbuya Mlambo, who scooped the award in the arts category in 2007, the late sculptor Coleen Madamombe (2008), Margot Denis in 2009 and filmmaker Nakai Matema, who won the award last year, among others.
