ENGLAND-BASED Zimbabwean endurance athlete, Sipho Hobane Ndlovu, hopes his participation at this weekend’s World Duathlon Championships in Aviles, Spain, will inspire other aspiring local athletes to pursue their dreams.
The 31-year-old athlete will be the country’s lone representative at the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships.
He will compete against 22 other participants, from different countries around the world, in the men’s 30-34 age group category. His participation at the global event will cap off a remarkable rise in the sport for the Bulawayo-born athlete.
His passion for the sport started when he was studying for his Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise
Nutrition at the University of Westminster in London. “I enjoy challenging myself to achieve things that I never would have thought possible,’’ he said.
“If someone had told me that this is what I will be doing in November 2021, I would have laughed at them. “I decided to enter so that I can show the young Zimbabweans that if someone like me, who was never been really sporty growing up, can participate at World Championship level.
“Well, my biggest goal is to encourage young Zimbabweans, though my own story, that with hard work anything is possible, you just have to believe in yourself and be willing to learn the lessons along the way. “I also hope to diversify my duathlon racing portfolio and over time transition into long distance duathlon racing in the years to come.
“It is a process and as someone who loves challenges, I am ready to learn and evolve as an athlete through the guidance of those that have gone before me.”
