NEHOREKA, an afro-centric band, is set to perform on the main stage at Bayimba International Festival of the Arts in Uganda slated for September 22. The Zimbabwean group is not new to the international stage as it has performed in Southern Africa and back home. It appears the group is set to rock Ugandans with their favourite ditties which made them a big name. Nehoreka is famous for its distinct afro-jazz fusion with a hint of afro-pop which has since been coined “Jukwa”. The band came together in 1998 after Percy Nhara, the lead vocalist, took a break from the family band, reggae outfit PACE fronted by Man-Soul-Jah.
Driven by a strong passion for music and the band’s deep African roots, Percy and friends decided to put their thoughts into music and came up with a distinct sound that reflects their deep cultural backgrounds and so the band came into being.
The three – Percy Nhara “Shumba”, Solomon Jahwi “Drugz” and Innocent “Matrix” Madamombe – started performing together in Gweru before moving to Harare. Their first song was the chart topping “Magagada” in 1999, which reached number one, on the then 3FM (now Power FM)’s Top 20. This scorcher was followed by another chart buster and number one hit “Ndatsvaga Ndashayiwa”.
