Neighbourhood cops extort US$225

(32) and Stephen Gora (37) all of Chitungwiza were not formally charged with extortion.

They appeared before magistrate Mr Donald Masawi who remanded them to July 2 on US$30 bail apiece.
Mr Phillip Hamunakwadi of Mugiya and Mupindu Law Firm is representing them.

Allegations against the three arose on May 31 at around 10am when they approached Muzenda at his home and introduced themselves as police officers stationed at Chitungwiza Police Station.

It is further alleged that the trio told him that they were looking for someone by the name Benjamin Zenda in connection with a case of rape. They reportedly arrested Muzenda alleging that he was the one they were looking for.

Muzenda denied leading the trio to drag him to their Mercedes Benz and drive him to Makoni Shopping Centre.
Upon arrival at the centre, they ordered Muzenda to pay US$4 for mending a tyre puncture on their car and buy them lunch for US$21.

The court heard that they demanded US$200 so that they would not detain him.
On June 1, after receiving information that Muzenda had reported the case to the police, they called him to collect his money.

They later met at Chikwanha where they handed US$200 to Muzenda and asked for an apology.
Muzenda drove to Chitungwiza Police Station  and reported the matter leading to their arrest.
