Placed third on the log with 28 points after 15 matches, Chiefs are just three points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
“There were some issues that may have affected us on the field but this is now in the past,” says Nengomasha.
“We did not perform to our maximum potential during the first 15 matches but the good thing is that we are in a strong position.
“The league title is still within reach because we are not too far away from the log leaders. We just have to make sure that we collect as many points as possible in our next games.”
The midfielder — who is the interim skipper in the absence of an injured Itumeleng Khune — also conceded the club’s failure in cup competitions this season.
Nengomasha says winning the Nedbank Cup would bring back smiles on the faces of Chiefs supporters, who this season have had to constantly swallow the bitter pill that always comes with the success of their bitter
rivals Orlando Pirates.
“There is still the Nedbank Cup to look forward to and the fact that we have not had much success in cup competitions will make us hungry to win this one,” says the midfield stalwart.
And while Vladimir Vermezovic says the long South African Premiership break may negatively affect Kaizer Chiefs’ league title quest, some coaches are using the time to
perfect their strategies ahead of a tough second round.
The league is currently on an eight-week recess for the festive season and the Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place from 21 January to 12 February.
The Amakhosi coach says the long break has the potential of affecting the momentum that Chiefs have built up, as it may impact on the fitness of players.
“We have been playing well of late and when a team is in good form, it is not always good for the games to be stopped,” the outspoken Serbian coach says.
“We will have to start again after the break by building the momentum. These long breaks can affect the fitness of players but there is nothing we can do,” he adds.
League breaks have in the past also been criticised by Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund. — Kickoff.com
