ZESA HOLDINGS has urged property owners, businesses and homeowners generating solar energy to participate in net metering saying this could unlock over 100MW of clean energy during the day, adding to the 20MW from almost 300 businesses and households already being supplied and ease load shedding.
Net metering is a system that allows solar energy system owners to sell excess electricity, such as quite often happens in the middle of the day, to the national grid and get credit for it.
They only pay the balance between what they use and what they supply.
This two-way system allows for more efficient use of renewable energy resources, as households and businesses can both contribute to and benefit from the national grid.
ZESA stakeholder relations, communications and welfare manager, Dr George Manyaya, urged all solar users to feed electricity into the national grid in return for electricity credits they use when they do not have sufficient renewable supply.
“We are calling upon all consumers or anyone with solar power, be it schools, at home or industry, to partake in this net metering project.
“The net metering programme is whereby customers can actually feed back the excess energy that they have using solar into the national grid.”
With 20MW already coming onto the grid during the sunniest hours, the concept has proved itself, hence the invitation for everyone else with suitable panels not using everything generated to participate.
