John Dube, the Zimbabwe Netball Association fixtures secretary for Matabeleland South, said the new league is expected to start next week.
“As Gwanda District, we are hoping to have at least 10 teams so that the league can begin. At the moment we have eight teams and we are hoping to have other teams joining so as to have a competitive league,” said Dube, who is also the Blanket Mine netball team coach.
Dube will get comfort in that a total of 17 teams pitched up last week for a tournament which was meant to prepare teams for the upcoming season.
Shining Stars came first and walked away with $100, while Mawabeni got $75 for being runners-up. Gwanda Giants came third and took home $50.
Dube said the provincial teams were suffering as some had to go far to compete and others could not raise the transport funds hence they were condemned to
playing social netball and tournaments which affected their competitiveness and fitness.
As such it has been seen appropriate to have a league so that the local teams benefit and have competition for most of the year.
Team registration fees have been set at $100 while player registration has been pegged at $2.
