Netflix is expanding its focus on African stories with a new drama series, The Polygamist, which is set to premiere on 12 June.
The 22-episode telenovela is based on the debut bestselling novel by Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi, marking another step in bringing local literature to the screen.

The story follows four women whose lives are linked to wealthy banker Jonasi Gomora. It explores love, power and betrayal, while looking at the realities of polygamy.
The show highlights themes of ambition, survival and emotional struggle, reflecting the growing demand for deeper, more relatable African stories.
Award-winning actor Sdumo Mtshali plays Jonasi Gomora, a powerful man with influence beyond business. Gugu Gumede stars as his wife, Joyce Gomora, portraying a woman dealing with love and loyalty in a difficult marriage.
The series also features a strong supporting cast, including Kwanele Mthethwa, Sthandiwe Kgoroge, Kenneth Nkosi and comedian Celeste Ntuli. Luyanda Zwane and Vuyo Biyela add to the mix, creating a diverse and multi-generational line-up.
Production is led by Stained Glass Productions, known for popular South African shows like Uzalo, Durban Gen and The Wife. Their involvement points to a high-quality production with strong local roots.
The Polygamist reflects a growing trend in African television, where books are being adapted for wider audiences. These projects help bring powerful stories to life and connect with viewers across the continent and beyond.
With its strong cast and emotional storyline, the series is set to attract wide attention when it launches.
