MOBILE communications giant NetOne has hailed the Bulawayo Christian community for heeding President Mnangagwa’s call for the nation to consistently clean the environment every first Friday of the month.

Speaking at the end of the clean-up campaign on Friday, organised by the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD), NetOne Head of Public Relations Mr Richard Mahomva said it was humbling to see Christians from different denominations coming together to clean the city of Bulawayo.

The Christian community is represented by the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Council of Churches, Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference and the Union for the Development of Apostolic Churches in Zimbabwe Africa.

“I want to appreciate the church leaders and their congregates who are with us here which is proof of the importance of churches. We want to indeed applaud you for organising this cleanup campaign.

“To the Bulawayo community in general, you have shown that you are able to organise yourselves at the same time showing those that are not part of this program ought to be educated so that they come on board. On behalf of NetOne I want to say thank you all,” said Mr Mahomva.

The national clean-up campaign, which was launched on December 5, 2018 by President Mnangagwa, takes place every first Friday of the month and is aimed at promoting a clean, safe and healthy environment while ensuring sustainable waste management.

Today’s campaign is running under the theme: “From Household to Community: Driving Zero Waste Together.”
According to the Environmental Management Agency, the theme recognises that the journey towards zero waste begins at the household level but achieves meaningful impact when communities work collectively through waste separation, recycling, composting and responsible consumption.

Today’s campaign comes days after Zimbabwe joined the rest of the continent in commemorating Africa Environment Day on March 3.

This year’s Africa Environment Day commemorations ran under the theme “Biodiversity and Traditional Knowledge: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods,” highlighting the importance of indigenous knowledge systems in protecting ecosystems and sustaining livelihoods across the continent.
