NetOne, through their One Wallet brand, launched the inaugural Charity Shield knock-out tournament for women’s football yesterday and said chances were high the tourney could be held on an annual basis.
NetOne yesterday unveiled a US$75 000 sponsorship package which included kits for the 12-team women’s tournament, which kicks off this weekend, at various stadiums across the country.
The organisation’s managing director, Reward Kangai, said they were in a relationship with the national women football league this year but will review their pact after the tournament.
“Definitely chances are pretty high we could have this on an annual basis. We are fully behind the women’s football league and believe they will live up to our expectations so that we can continue with our support fully in future.
“We work towards performance targets and they are pretty much aware of our expectations. We obviously would want these funds to be utilised for their purpose.
“So it calls upon the Zimbabwe Women Football League to utilise the resources that we have made available towards the cause for women football and that encompasses administration because all those aspects will come into the review process,” Kangai said.
Zimbabwe Women Football boss Mavis Gumbo, in a speech read on secretary-general Ben Mamoche, hailed NetOne for their support.
“Last year was not the best year for women’s football; while we toured faraway places like Uruguay and conquered our regional rivals we did not play our national league.
“It is the biggest knock-out tournament women football has ever had in Zimbabwe, we believe in taking the first steps and we look forward to taking many more,” said Gumbo, who is away with the Mighty Warriors in Egypt.
