WHEN Ghanaian defender Christopher Nettey completed his move to Zimbabwean football giants Dynamos in March, respected news outlet GhanaSoccernet, described the development as “a significant new chapter in his career.”
Back in Ghana they believe the 27-year-old former Asante Kotoko player will make significant strides in his career at DeMbare where he is also expected to feature in the CAF Confederation Cup later this year.
Growing up in Chorkor, a town in Accra, a young Nettey did not know much about Zimbabwean football. But, he knew Dynamos were “the biggest and greatest club” in Zimbabwe.
Nettey was born in 1999, a year after DeMbare reached the CAF Champions League final, in which they lost 2-4 against ASEC Mimosas of Cote D’Ivoire.
And now, 27 years later, Nettey is wearing the famous blue and white strip for Dynamos, 21-time winners of the top-flight championship.
He has started brightly, featuring prominently as Dynamos enjoy their best start to a season in a decade. DeMbare are unbeaten in their opening six matches. They have picked up 14 points out of a possible 18 and are second on the log behind CAPS United who have a point more.
With 14 points out of a possible 18, DeMbare have a 78 percent success rate in these early stages of the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.
“My stay has been good so far.
“The manner in which Zimbabweans love their football has surprised me a lot,” Nettey told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
“When I came to Harare I didn’t know that much about Zimbabwean football, but I knew Dynamos were the biggest and greatest club in Zimbabwe even before I joined,” added Nettey.
He has started in all of DeMbare’s opening six matches. He first caught the eye when he roamed the right channel with aplomb as Dynamos drew 2-2 against Highlanders in the Battle of Zimbabwe on Match Day Two.
Nettey has never looked back.
He is now touted as an apt replacement for former Dynamos skipper and right back Emmanuel Jalai who is now playing for Durban City in South Africa.
The 27-year-old Nettey definitely looks to be fitting the bill, thanks to his experience.
He won the 2021/2022 Ghana Premier Soccer League title with Asante Kotoko.
Nettey also featured for Ghana during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
He also had spells with Accra Great Olympics and Nations FC back in Ghana.
“Dynamos are a great side.
“The players are highly motivated in terms of welfare. But as a footballer you mustn’t wait for money to get motivated, though it’s part of the motivation.
“You know why you are playing so you must be motivated anytime you are called up to do duty,” Nettey said.
At this stage last season, Dynamos registered six points from six matches.
This term, the Glamour Boys have improved that tally by 133 percent to 14 points.
At this stage last season, Dynamos scored once, this term they have banged nine goals in six matches, at an average of 1.5 per match.
It’s a vast improvement from last season’s 0.16 goals per match during the comparative period.
At this stage last season, DeMbare had lost two matches against Manica Diamonds and Chicken Inn. They are yet to lose this season.
“We are yet to lose a game because we are determined not to lose,” Nettey said.
“We have started on a very good note and I can attribute that to hard work and determination.
“When my agent called me telling me there was an opportunity at Dynamos I didn’t know it would be this good. I knew I would be coming to replace someone like Jalai but so far so good.”
Nicknamed “Jet” back in Accra, because of his speed, Nettey was on top of his game once again when Dynamos edged Simba Bhora 1-0 in their own backyard on Sunday.
This was DeMbare’s first league win against Go Buju Go in Shamva.
“It was a great win.
“I am happy to be here in Harare.
“But I am still waiting for a new nickname here. Back in Ghana they called me ‘Jet’,” revealed the 27-year-old Nettey.
It’s certain, the Ghanaian will be one of the star attractions when Dynamos host FC Platinum at Rufaro on Sunday.
