THE Ministry of Industry and Commerce has penalised more than 11 000 shops for displaying and selling poorly labelled, expired and underweight goods.

Director of consumer affairs in the ministry,Dr Douglas Runyowa, said the offenders were nabbed and charged in May.

“During the month of May alone, our Trade Measures Department confiscated products from 11 130 offenders for a list of non-compliance issues,” he said.

“A total of 1 390 businesses were also prosecuted for other offences that include selling expired goods. Other cases are still with the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

“We call upon businesses to adhere to good ethics and practices and for consumers to help by reaching out to the Consumer Protection Commission, the Trade Measures Department or even the law-enforcement agencies when they discover such issues.”
