FIFTEEN more unlicensed firearms were surrendered to the police on Wednesday, raising the total number of firearms that have been surrendered since the firearms amnesty was announced on August 8 to 100.
The amnesty, which runs until September 30, was issued in line with Article 12 of SADC Protocol on the Control of Firearms, Ammunition and Related Materials.
By August 15, 85 unlicensed firearms had been surrendered to the police.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “On August 16, 2022, fifteen (15) firearms were surrendered to the police under the operation ‘Firearms Amnesty’, bringing the cumulative number of surrendered firearms to 100.”
No criminal charges will be preferred to members of the public during this period as long as one complies with provisions of the Presidential Amnesty.
The amnesty also covers anyone who is in possession of any weapon that was smuggled or illegally brought into the country.
