NEW: 1,7 million arrested for violating Covid-19 regulations

More than 1,7 million people have been arrested for violating Covid-19 regulations since measures to combat the pandemic were first introduced in March 2020, latest statistics show. 

On Sunday alone, nearly 2 000 people were arrested for the violations. 

In a statement on Tuesday, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “On 22 May 2022, police arrested 1 949 people throughout the country for violating Covid-19-related offences. The cumulative number of arrests since March 30 2020 stands at 1 724 794.”
