Following a video that went viral in which some children are seen being assaulted supposedly by their parents or guardians for failing to raise enough through begging, the police have moved in and removed 22 of such people from the Harare central business district.

The children and their guardians were handed over to the Department of Social Welfare.

The video showed two children being beaten up by female adults using thick sticks near Joina City building soon after they retreated from begging.

“Police in Harare, in conjunction with the Department of Social Welfare, carried out an operation in the streets of Harare CBD removing children and their guardians who were begging for food in Harare CBD, particularly along Rezende Street, Joina City and Town House areas,” said the police in a statement.

“As a result, 22 children and their guardians were handed over to the Department of Social Welfare.”

The police implored guardians not to use children and the disabled to beg for money and food in the streets as they risk arrest for violating the country’s laws protecting children.
