POLICE have released the names of the six people who were killed in a fatal road traffic accident involving a Mazda BT50 vehicle and a haulage truck that occurred at 22 Miles along the Mutare-Marange Road yesterday.
In a statement today, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the death toll as six, with the youngest victim aged one; while 12 passengers were injured.
He said the driver of the haulage truck fled from the scene after the accident.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on January 12 at around 1pm at the 35 kilometer peg along Mutare-Marange Road in which six people were killed while 12 others were injured.
“A Mazda BT50 vehicle with 17 passengers on board, which was travelling towards 22 Miles was hit from behind by a haulage truck while giving way to a stationery truck at Marange Turn-off. The driver of the haulage truck fled from the scene.
“The six victims were identified by their next of kin as listed: Anna Tariro Machangachanga (30) of Mutare, Joyce Duchi of Mutare, Portia Nyamajo of Mutare, Nomatter Hwenzira of Mutare, Tsitsi Masuzhe of Mutare and Addella Henzira of Mutare,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.
He said the bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi implored motorists to observe all road rules and regulations and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.
