THE 24 hours opening of Forbes Border Post commenced yesterday with no major glitches being reported.
Before the latest development, the border will close at 10pm and both Zimbabwe and Mozambique authorities agreed on the extension of operating times at Forbes (Zimbabwe) and Machipanda (Mozambique).
Regional immigration officer for the eastern region, Mr Richard Tambandini, confirmed that everything went according to plan on the first day of opening the border for 24 hours.
“Everything went according to plan and we are happy with this development. Our systems are in place and no challenges were encountered. We recorded 22 entries into the country and 83 exits from 10pm up to this morning. We expect the volumes to increase with time as people become accustomed to the new development,” said Mr Tambandini.
Shipping and Forwarding Agents Association of Zimbabwe’s branch chairperson, Mrs Priscilla Murewanhema, welcomed the opening of the border 24/7 and promised that her association will be up to the task.
“We welcome this development as this will reduce congestion at the border. This will also ensure the fast movement of goods. We will also improve all operations modalities on our part,” she said.
