A favourable investment environment created by President Mnangagwa has encouraged a mining company in Shamva to launch the “A Tree a Student Campaign” aimed at restoring the environment and enhancing the community around their business.
This initiative will allow each learner at Jiti High School to own and nurture a tree until they complete their studies.
Canterbury Mining Company, which operates in Shamva, donated 500 mango trees to five schools in Shamva South and North to establish orchards.
The schools are Jiti High School, Jiti Primary School, Chidembo Secondary School, Chidembo Primary School and Nyamaropa Secondary School.
Jiti High School was recognised for winning this year’s Environmental Management Agency’s smart schools competition.
Mr Samuel Rusike, the corporate communications manager for Canterbury Mining, stated that the company aims to support President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030.
He noted that the President has called on everyone to contribute to efforts against climate change.
“As a company operating in Shamva, we chose to give back by planting trees. We are also supporting the school for winning the smart environment competition,” he said.
The event received support from the Forestry Commission and the Environmental Management Agency.
Mr Maxwell Mupotsa, the environmental education and publicist officer for Mashonaland Central, added that the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, is the patron of the “Catch Them Young” and clean schools’ programmes.
This initiative is sponsored by Eversharp and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
“This is a great opportunity for children from diverse backgrounds to learn about waste recycling and the importance of maintaining a clean environment,” he said.
