Accountants should embrace integrity and ethical conduct to protect the public interest and drive sustainable economic growth, acting Auditor-General Mrs Rheah Kujinga has said.

Mrs Kijinga made this call at the graduation and awards ceremony for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) students in Harare on Saturday.

The acting Auditor-General told the graduating students: “Being an ambassador of ACCA, you have tremendous expectations of upholding its values, which are accountability, diversity, opportunity, innovation, and integrity.

“I urge you to embrace these values as they are central to protecting the public interest and achieving sustainable economic growth.”

Mrs Kujinga said upholding ethical behaviour is crucial in accounting, as the profession is vulnerable to ethical lapses.

“We have seen many scandals in the private and public sectors, some perpetrated by qualified accountants. We don’t expect that from you, we expect to see you making a difference in the economy as you assist your current and future employers to survive and thrive. Grow to become ethical professionals of integrity and good repute.

“Don’t drag the profession into disrepute because of a small bribe,” she said.
