The Government, in collaboration with various partners, has launched Operation Chenesa Harare Phase 3, an initiative aimed at clearing dumping sites across the capital and enhancing cleanliness and waste management.
The programme brings together the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, the City of Harare, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), and Geo Pomona Waste Management.
This launch coincides with Geo Pomona Waste Management’s preparations to assume responsibility for waste collection in the city.
The initiative serves as an opportunity for the company to gain hands-on experience in managing Harare’s waste collection system effectively.
Speaking at the launch on Monday at Tichagarika Shops in Glen View, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe emphasised the critical role played by private companies in waste management.
He acknowledged Geo Pomona Waste Management’s contributions to the initiative.
“The Government appreciates the private sector’s support during previous phases of Operation Chenesa Harare,” said Minister Garwe.
“It is encouraging to see various stakeholders working together and surpassing the targets for solid waste deposited at Pomona Landfill.”
He also expressed gratitude for the private sector’s donation of essential equipment, including tipper trucks, refuse compactors, and front-end loaders, which will facilitate waste management efforts.
Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Senator Charles Tawengwa underscored the importance of cleanliness in attracting investment.
“A dirty city leaves a negative impression on foreign investors. It hampers economic growth and job creation,” he said.
“Unmanaged waste tarnishes our national pride and creates a breeding ground for disease-carrying pests such as mosquitoes, rodents, and flies.”
Geo Pomona Waste Management chief executive officer and executive chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya stressed the need for long-term waste management solutions.
“This should not be a one-time event but the start of sustained efforts to transform Harare into a cleaner city. We must embrace a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility in all aspects of our lives,” said Dr Nguwaya.
Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume highlighted the importance of collaboration in maintaining the city’s cleanliness, emphasising that waste management should transcend political differences.
“This initiative is a significant step towards restoring Harare’s cleanliness,” Mayor Mafume said.
“By working with Geo Pomona Waste Management, we can ensure proper waste handling and disposal. Cleanliness is a shared responsibility that affects everyone, regardless of political affiliation.”
The launch of Operation Chenesa Harare Phase 3 marks a renewed commitment to sustainable waste management practices, with the hope that continuous efforts will lead to a cleaner city for all residents
