GOVERNMENT has appointed new members to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development Advisory Council.
Mr Moses Magura will chair the council and be deputised by Ms Teverai Chigogo.
Women Affairs, Community and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Dr Sithembiso Nyoni said, as pioneers, the council must prove its mettle in the five years it will be in office.
“Government recognises the critical role played by the MSMEs, as we endeavour to become an upper-middle income economy by 2030. Available statistics reveal the magnitude of the sector and its contribution to the economy of our country.
“The MSMEs survey of 2021 revealed that the sector was made of 3,4 million businesses and provided full-time employment to 4,8 million,” said Dr Nyoni.
The council is expected to advise Government, local authorities, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Corporation, as well as other statutory bodies relating to MSMEs.
In addition, it is expected to evaluate existing and proposed legislation on MSMEs and report findings to the minister and other stakeholders.
Dr Nyoni said her ministry has plans to review the Small and Medium Enterprises Act so that it conforms to the current developments taking place in the MSMEs sector.
