African governments need to invest in mass media to enable them to report on their development agenda.

Zhejiang Public Media and Communication Professor Tian Zhongchu said this during a recent seminar held in China for African journalists.

Professor Tian said China has worked hard on coordinating social behaviour and facilitating a balance between feeling the truth and maintaining social order.

“Apart from telling the truth, the media has other obligations such as coordinating the social behaviour of people to drive economic growth.

“If the media is used for promoting the development agenda, both the economy and society can become increasingly prosperous and open,” he said.
